Morning Transit Status and Recovery

Commuters heading through Oakland this morning, Tuesday, February 24, 2026, can expect a relatively smooth start to their journey following a disruptive weekend. BART officials have confirmed that full service through the Transbay Tube resumed early Monday morning after crews completed emergency repairs to communication cables in West Oakland. The cables were damaged by a street-level fire on Sunday, which had briefly paralyzed transbay transit. As of this morning, trains are running on their regular weekday schedules.

BART and AC Transit Service Updates

While morning service is stable, BART riders should prepare for late-night adjustments. Starting at 10:00 p.m. tonight, single-tracking will occur through the Transbay Tube to allow for ongoing maintenance. This work is expected to cause 20-to-30-minute delays for late-night travelers. Additionally, at the 19th Street Oakland station, repair work on the street-level escalator at 19th Street and Broadway is scheduled for completion today, which should improve station access by the evening rush.

AC Transit users are reminded that the "Realign" service changes, which went into effect on February 1, remain in place. Key adjustments affecting Oakland include:

  • Line 800: The final eastbound trips from San Francisco now terminate in Downtown Oakland rather than continuing to Richmond.
  • Line 19: Service between Fruitvale BART and Seminary Avenue has been discontinued and moved to Line 54.
  • Tempo (Line 1T): The Uptown Oakland northbound terminal at 19th Street has moved from the south side of the intersection to the north side.

Major Roadworks and Highway Alerts

On the roads, the Oakland Alameda Access Project (OAAP) has entered its early staging phase this week. While major construction is not slated to begin until March, drivers around the Webster Tube and the Chinatown district should watch for increased construction activity and utility crews. Caltrans is evaluating shifting potential daytime lane closures in the Webster Tube to overnight hours to minimize impact on the morning commute.

For those commuting into San Francisco, be advised that the return trip may face bottlenecks. Caltrans has scheduled overnight lane closures on the Western Span of the Bay Bridge for joint rehabilitation. Furthermore, ramp closures on Eastbound I-80 at 7th and Bryant Streets in San Francisco are scheduled between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. through the end of the week, which may affect late-night drivers returning to the East Bay.

Regional Transit Outlook

In broader news, transit advocates are expressing relief today after Governor Newsom signed legislation for a $590 million bridge loan. This funding is specifically designed to avert the service cuts and station closures that had been threatened for major agencies including BART and AC Transit. While long-term funding remains a topic for the upcoming November election, the loan ensures that current service levels in Oakland will remain stable through the spring and summer months.
