Oakland Traffic and Commute Update: Saturday, February 21, 2026

Commuters in the East Bay should prepare for notable changes in traffic patterns this weekend as major infrastructure projects enter new phases. While weekend traffic is generally lighter than the weekday rush, specific closures at the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and new construction staging near the I-880 corridor will require extra travel time.

Major Access Project Staging on I-880 and Posey Tube

Early construction staging for the Oakland Alameda Access Project (OAAP) is now visible as of mid-February. This long-term project aims to streamline the bottleneck between I-880, I-980, and the Posey and Webster Tubes. While full-scale lane closures are not yet in effect, motorists should be alert for workers and equipment near the freeway ramps and tube entrances. Caltrans has indicated that while the project will eventually involve overnight and weekend closures of the tubes, both the Posey and Webster Tubes will remain open today, though traffic may slow due to staging activities in the area.

Bay Bridge and I-80 Off-Ramp Closures

For those traveling from Oakland into San Francisco, a significant weekend closure is currently in effect. The Eastbound I-80 4th Street Off-ramp in San Francisco is closed from Friday evening through Monday morning, February 23. This is part of the ongoing rehabilitation of the Central and Bayshore Viaducts. Oakland residents heading across the bridge for weekend events should expect congestion on the bridge itself as motorists navigate toward alternate exits like 5th Street or 7th Street.

AC Transit and BART Service Updates

AC Transit riders are reminded that the new "Realign" service network, which took effect earlier this month, is now the standard for all routes. Key updates for today include:

  • Line 1T (Tempo): The Uptown Oakland northbound station on Broadway has shifted to the north side of 19th Street.
  • Lines 19 and 20: Potential detours in the Chinatown area are expected to begin this evening at 6:00 p.m. due to local events.
  • Late-Night Service: Riders should note that several lines, including Line 7 and Line 30, have recently seen schedule adjustments that may result in earlier last-trip times on weekends.

BART is currently operating on its regular Saturday schedule. However, passengers should stay tuned for upcoming board decisions regarding long-term service adjustments and potential station closures being debated later this month.

Speed Camera Warning Period

Finally, the City of Oakland has officially entered the warning phase for its new Speed Safety Camera Program. While citations will not be issued until mid-March, cameras are active across several high-injury corridors. Motorists are encouraged to observe posted speed limits to avoid future penalties and improve overall safety in downtown and neighborhood zones.
