Heavy Morning Delays on I-80 and Key Transit Alerts for Oakland Commuters

Morning Highway Conditions and Major Arteries

Commuters heading into and out of Oakland this Wednesday, February 25, 2026, should prepare for significant congestion on the I-80 corridor. Early morning reports indicated a traffic hazard near the Ashby Avenue off-ramp and a car fire near Central Avenue on Westbound I-80. While emergency crews have been working to clear these incidents, residual rubbernecking and lane bottlenecks are affecting the flow toward the Bay Bridge. Additionally, Caltrans continues its overnight lane and ramp closures on I-80 between Albany and Hercules; while lanes typically reopen by 5:00 a.m., localized striping work has led to lingering slow-downs in the far-right lanes.

Drivers using the Webster Tube should also notice increased activity. The Oakland Alameda Access Project has entered its early construction staging phase. While full closures are not yet in effect, motorists should expect intermittent daytime lane shifts as crews install safety infrastructure. Caltrans is currently evaluating shifting future Webster Tube work to overnight hours to mitigate these heavy daytime impacts.

BART and Rail Service Updates

For those relying on rail, the 19th St. Oakland Station is under significant maintenance. A major entrance closure began earlier this week and is scheduled to remain in effect through March 8. Commuters are advised to use alternative station entrances and allow an extra five to ten minutes for navigating the platform. Furthermore, multiple street-level escalators at both the 12th St. Oakland City Center and 19th St. stations are currently out of service for evaluation and repair, which may slow down peak-hour foot traffic.

System-wide, BART riders on the Yellow Line should expect 20- to 30-minute delays after 9:00 p.m. due to ongoing train control modernization work that is slated to continue through the summer. Capitol Corridor travelers also face disruptions; due to track work by Union Pacific, service between Auburn and San Jose is experiencing delays of up to 15 minutes. Specifically, several trains—including 520, 526, 531, and 537—have been cancelled through late February due to equipment availability issues.

AC Transit and Local Roadwork

AC Transit users are still adjusting to the "Realign" network changes that took effect on February 1. Notable schedule shifts affect Line 7 and the All-Nighter Line 800, which now terminates in Downtown Oakland rather than continuing to Richmond. Additionally, local construction is impacting specific stops today:

  • 14th Ave at E. 26th St: The stop is closed today from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for active construction. Riders of Line 96 should use alternative boarding locations.
  • Telegraph Avenue: Construction is intensified near the corner of 22nd Street for the new Eliza housing project. Expect sidewalk detours and heavy machinery near the 19th Street station.
  • The Alameda at Hopkins St: Daily construction continues to shutter this stop between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., affecting Lines 12 and 27.

Commuters are encouraged to check real-time departure apps before heading out, as these localized projects are contributing to varied arrival times across the city's transit network.
