Public Meeting: Homelessness Strategic Action Plan

The Oakland Homelessness Commission is scheduled to meet today, Wednesday, February 25, at 6:00 PM. The primary item on the agenda is a comprehensive discussion of the updated Homeless Strategic Action Plan. This ambitious roadmap, developed by the Oakland Department of Homelessness Services, outlines new frameworks for neighborhood relations and identifies specific revenue needs to address encampments in East and West Oakland neighborhoods. The plan includes specific actions regarding neighborhood relations and sanitation standards. Residents are encouraged to attend in person or observe the proceedings via the city's virtual broadcast platform.

Public Hearing: Waste Management Regulatory Fees

A formal public hearing regarding Ordinance 2026-01 is set for this afternoon at 3:00 PM. The hearing will take place at 1537 Webster Street. The proposed ordinance seeks to establish a new regulatory fee of $0.30 per month for single-family residential solid waste service accounts. This fee is designed to bolster citywide recycling efforts and support sustainable waste management infrastructure. Community members who are unable to attend the hearing in person were permitted to submit written comments to the Clerk of the Board prior to the session to ensure their voices are included in the official record.

Public Health Advisory: Respiratory Virus Precautions

The Alameda County Public Health Department and the California Department of Public Health have issued active advisories regarding an uptick in seasonal respiratory illnesses. Health officials are specifically monitoring a newly circulating strain identified as influenza A H3N2 subclade K. In response to increased hospital admissions statewide, the city continues to align with state guidance strongly recommending the use of masks for staff and visitors in all patient care areas of licensed hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and infusion centers. This recommendation remains in effect through March 31, 2026, to protect vulnerable populations during the peak of the virus season.

Transportation and Infrastructure Updates

The Oakland Department of Transportation (OakDOT) has announced an extension of the grace period for Sunday parking meter operations. Enforcement of Sunday meter fees, which involves the use of city meters on the first day of the week, will now officially commence on Sunday, April 12, 2026. This extension provides residents and local businesses additional time to adjust to the updated weekend parking regulations.

In infrastructure news, the Grand Avenue Complete Streets Paving Project has reached its 100% design milestone this month. Residents can expect further updates regarding the upcoming construction schedule and potential lane reconfigurations intended to improve pedestrian safety, transit reliability, and cycling access around the Lake Merritt corridor.

Community Services: Dimond District Cleanup

The weekly Dimond District Community Cleanup is active today. Volunteers are invited to gather in the district to assist with litter removal and neighborhood beautification. The city provides all necessary equipment, including tools, gloves, and bags. This recurring event is part of a larger citywide effort to maintain clean and accessible public spaces through direct neighborhood involvement and volunteerism.
