Super Bowl Festivities and Major Construction Headlining Monday Commute

Oakland commuters are facing a complex start to the work week this Monday, February 2, 2026. With Super Bowl LX festivities officially kicking off across the Bay Area today, traffic patterns are shifting as visitors arrive for the week-long celebration. Local drivers should expect increased activity near the Oakland Fan Zone and major thoroughfares leading to the Bay Bridge and South Bay.

Major Roadworks and Freeway Alerts

Several major regional construction projects are impacting transit times for those entering or leaving Oakland today:

  • I-80 Carquinez Bridge: Caltrans has implemented scheduled lane closures on the Carquinez Bridge. On Mondays, these closures are in effect from 3:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Motorists traveling between the East Bay and North Bay should expect significant delays and are encouraged to use the Benicia-Martinez Bridge as an alternative.
  • Oakland Alameda Access Project: While major excavation begins next month, early construction staging is now visible around the I-880 and I-980 corridors. Drivers in the Jack London District and near the Posey/Webster Tubes should remain alert for survey crews and initial equipment mobilization.
  • Coastal Flooding Risk: The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement through 9:00 AM this morning. High tides may cause minor flooding on low-lying shoreline roads and near tidal waterways in the Port of Oakland area.

AC Transit: First Weekday for New Service Schedules

Commuters using AC Transit will notice changes this morning as the new service network adjustments, which began yesterday, face their first weekday test. These updates are designed to address overcrowding and improve reliability on high-demand lines. Notably, the planned stop change for Line 18 at Shattuck Ave. and Ashby Ave. has been delayed due to construction issues; riders should continue to use the existing stop until further notice.

BART and Rail Updates

Public transport is highly recommended this week to avoid Super Bowl-related traffic, but several maintenance projects are currently active:

  • Capitol Corridor: Service remains reduced through March 1 due to equipment unavailability. Specifically for today, Train 749 (Sacramento to Oakland Jack London) and Train 732 (Oakland to Sacramento) have been canceled.
  • 12th St. Oakland City Center: The street-level escalator at 13th St. and Broadway remains out of service for modernization work, with a projected return date of February 6.
  • Clipper System Upgrades: BART riders are reminded that due to ongoing system upgrades, you must now hold your Clipper card at the reader (rather than a quick tap) to ensure the transaction processes correctly at vending machines and fare gates.
