Public Notice: Presidents’ Day Holiday Schedules and City Service Adjustments

City Hall and Public Library Closures
In observance of the Presidents’ Day holiday on Monday, February 16, 2026, all City of Oakland administrative offices will be closed. This closure includes the City Council offices, the Office of the City Clerk, and various department headquarters. While administrative functions are suspended for the holiday, emergency services—including the Oakland Police Department and Oakland Fire Department—will remain fully operational to ensure public safety. All branches of the Oakland Public Library system will also be closed for the day, with all locations scheduled to resume their standard operating hours on Tuesday, February 17.
BART Holiday Service Schedule
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has officially announced that it will operate on a Saturday service schedule for the holiday on Monday, February 16. Under this schedule, trains will begin running at 6:00 a.m. and will cease operations at midnight. Commuters are encouraged to check the official trip planner for specific departure times, as frequency will be reduced compared to a standard weekday. Furthermore, Presidents’ Day is designated as a parking holiday. Parking will be free at all BART-operated stations for the duration of the day. Please be aware that this exemption does not apply to the Milpitas and Berryessa/North San Jose stations, which are managed by the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA).
Waste and Recycling Pickup Delay
Residential and commercial waste services will experience a one-day delay this week due to the holiday. Waste Management of Alameda County and California Waste Solutions have confirmed that no curbside collections for trash, recycling, or compost will take place on Monday, February 16. All service days for the remainder of the week will be pushed back by one day. For instance, residents with a regularly scheduled Monday pickup will see their bins serviced on Tuesday, and those with a Friday schedule will have their collections completed on Saturday, February 21. Normal service cycles will resume the following Monday.
Winter Weather and Health Resources
Local health and social service representatives have issued a reminder regarding available winter weather resources. With the continuation of the winter season, warming centers remain available for residents needing reprieve from cold overnight temperatures. Alameda County is coordinating with local shelter providers to ensure that vulnerable residents have access to safety tips and emergency housing options. Residents are encouraged to monitor seasonal health advisories and check on neighbors who may be at higher risk during periods of inclement weather.
Upcoming City Council Sessions
Because of the Monday holiday, the Oakland City Council has no meetings scheduled for February 16. However, the legislative body is set to return to session on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. A concurrent meeting of the Oakland Redevelopment Successor Agency and the City Council is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. Members of the public may attend the session at City Hall or participate through the city's virtual legislative portal. Agenda items for the upcoming session are available for public review through the Office of the City Clerk.
