Holiday Observance: Martin Luther King Jr. Day

City of Oakland administrative offices and service centers will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. While most municipal buildings—including City Hall and senior centers—will remain shuttered for the holiday, the African American Museum and Library at Oakland (AAMLO) will remain open to host its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Film Festival. All other Oakland Public Library branches will be closed, resuming normal operations on Tuesday.

Parking and Street Enforcement

Motorists are advised that metered parking is free throughout Oakland today, January 19. The city will not enforce parking meter regulations or residential permit parking time limits. Additionally, street sweeping services are suspended for the holiday, and no citations will be issued for street cleaning violations. Residents should note that while holiday parking is free, the new Sunday parking enforcement policy—which began earlier this month—remains in effect for the upcoming weekend.

Waste Management and Sanitation Services

Public Works has announced a modified collection schedule for the week of January 19. Because the holiday falls on a Monday, all trash, recycling, and compost collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. For example, customers with regularly scheduled Monday pickups will be serviced on Tuesday, and Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday. Normal collection schedules will resume the following week.

Public Health Advisory: Winter Respiratory Season

Alameda County Health officials continue to recommend masking in all indoor patient care areas, including hospitals and skilled nursing facilities, as the winter respiratory virus season continues through March. Additionally, a new regional health advisory has been issued following confirmed cases of leptospirosis in animals near the Berkeley-Oakland border at Codornices Creek. Residents are urged to avoid standing water or mud in these areas and to ensure domestic pets are vaccinated.

Community Service and Volunteer Opportunities

The city is currently seeking 500 volunteers to assist with the biennial Point in Time (PIT) Homeless Count scheduled for Thursday, January 22, 2026. This data collection effort is critical for securing federal funding for local homelessness solutions. Furthermore, hundreds of Oaklanders are participating in 52 community-led clean-up events today as part of the MLK Day of Service. For those still looking to contribute, neighborhood beautification kits remain available for local block leaders through the Keep the Town Clean initiative.
