Oakland Commute Overview for Thursday, February 12, 2026

Oakland commuters can expect a relatively stable morning commute today, though significant overnight maintenance projects and transit-oriented construction are set to impact late-night travel and station access. Clear, sunny skies and a high of 54 degrees are forecast for today, providing favorable driving conditions through the evening peak. However, those traveling after 10:00 p.m. should prepare for detour-heavy routes due to two major arterial closures.

Highways and Major Arteries

The most significant impacts today involve Caltrans maintenance scheduled for the late evening and early morning hours:

  • Caldecott Tunnel (CA-24): Caltrans has scheduled an overnight bore closure for the Caldecott Tunnel tonight, Thursday, February 12. Starting at 10:00 p.m. and continuing until 4:30 a.m. tomorrow, the eastbound CA-24 left bore will be closed. While at least one bore will remain open in each direction, motorists should anticipate delays and merging traffic.
  • Posey Tube (SR-260): Maintenance work will also trigger a full closure of the Posey Tube connecting Alameda and Oakland. The closure is scheduled from 11:00 p.m. tonight until 5:00 a.m. Friday morning. Commuters are advised to use the Webster Street Tube or the Park Street Bridge as alternates.
  • I-80 and I-580 Maintenance: Continuous overnight roadwork remains in effect on eastbound I-80 between Richmond and Albany. Additionally, rolling lane closures continue on I-580 near the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge for the ongoing open road tolling project. Expect reduced speed limits in these work zones.

Public Transit and Local Alerts

Public transport users should take note of several localized impacts across the BART and AC Transit systems:

  • West Oakland BART: Soil testing for the Mandela Station transit-oriented development continues to impact the West Oakland station parking lot. Up to 60 spaces may be offline intermittently today. Commuters are encouraged to arrive early or consider biking to the station.
  • BART Escalator Work: At the 12th St. Oakland City Center station, modernization work is active on the street-level escalator at 13th Street and Broadway. It is currently scheduled for completion or return to service today, but commuters should check for barricades.
  • AC Transit Detours: Local construction is causing delays for several lines. Line 45 remains on detour near Acalanes Drive and 105th Avenue until 5:00 p.m. Line 65 is also experiencing detours in the Berkeley/Oakland hills area due to utility maintenance.

Finally, riders should be aware that the BART Board of Directors is holding a critical workshop today at their Oakland headquarters on Webster Street. While this does not impact today's service levels, the board is discussing potential long-term service reductions of up to 70% if future funding measures are not secured. Riders are encouraged to monitor these developments via official transit channels.
