Legislative Meetings and Official Business

The City of Oakland has scheduled a meeting of the Rules & Legislation Committee for today, Thursday, January 29, 2026. The meeting will convene at 10:30 AM in the City Council Chamber, located on the 3rd Floor of City Hall. Key items on the agenda include the approval of draft minutes from the January 15 committee session and the review of pending lists and draft agendas for upcoming City Council and committee meetings. Residents are encouraged to participate in person or via established digital platforms.

Public Safety and Transportation Alerts

The City’s Automated Speed Safety Camera Program is currently active in its initial 60-day public awareness phase. Following the system's launch earlier this month, cameras installed along high-injury corridors are monitoring traffic speeds. During this grace period, violators will receive written warnings in the mail rather than financial citations. This initiative is part of Oakland's Vision Zero commitment to eliminate traffic-related fatalities.

Additionally, Caltrans is providing updates on the Oakland Alameda Access Project. In response to community concerns regarding traffic congestion, the project team is currently coordinating the 2026 construction schedule. Efforts are being made to shift daytime lane closures in the Webster Tube to overnight hours to minimize disruptions for commuters between Oakland and Alameda. Construction activities for this three-year project are expected to continue through 2029.

Public Health Advisories

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has maintained two significant health advisories affecting the Oakland area:

  • Kratom and 7-OH Warning: Residents and healthcare providers are cautioned against the use of kratom products, specifically those containing 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), which have been linked to serious adverse health effects and addiction.
  • Seasonal Influenza: Local health officials report a significant surge in influenza cases, primarily driven by the H3N2 strain. Vaccination and preventative hygiene measures are strongly recommended.

Community Recovery and Civic Engagement

A Local Assistance Center remains operational at 150 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza to support those impacted by the three-alarm structure fire on Broadway that occurred on January 19. Displaced residents and affected business owners can access coordination services for housing and financial support through the city and its community partners.

Finally, Alameda County is seeking applicants for several Boards and Commissions. Residents of District 3, which includes parts of Oakland, are invited to apply for vacancies on the Parks, Recreation and Historical Commission, the Public Health Commission, and the Reparations Commission. The deadline for applications is Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 5:00 PM.
