Official City Roundup: Public Health Advisories and Safety Program Updates

Public Health: Winter Respiratory Season and Critical Advisories
The Alameda County Public Health Department and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) have issued updated guidance for the winter respiratory virus season, which remains in effect through March 31, 2026. Residents are advised that influenza activity has seen a significant statewide surge, primarily driven by the H3N2 strain. Health officials recommend timely testing and vaccination to mitigate the spread of this newly circulating subclad.
- Masking Recommendations: Masking is strongly recommended for all staff and visitors in patient care areas of licensed health facilities, including hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and dialysis centers.
- Kratom Warning: A standing health advisory remains active regarding the use of kratom products, specifically those containing 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH). These substances have been linked to serious adverse effects, and the public is cautioned against their consumption.
Public Safety: Automated Speed Cameras and OPD Investigations
The City of Oakland’s new automated speed safety camera program is currently in its initial implementation phase. As of Wednesday, January 28, 2026, the program is in a 60-day public awareness period. During this time, motorists identified by cameras in high-injury corridors will receive written warnings via mail rather than citations. This initiative is part of the city’s Vision Zero commitment to eliminate traffic-related fatalities.
Additionally, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) is conducting an investigation into an officer-involved firearm discharge that occurred on the afternoon of January 27 in the 3400 block of Webster Street. No injuries were reported in the incident, and updates will be provided as the investigation proceeds. Furthermore, the City Council is currently reviewing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to allow OPD to provide tactical support and security for Super Bowl LX, scheduled for early February.
Government: Upcoming Council Committee Meetings
The Oakland City Council has several committee meetings scheduled to address municipal priorities. Residents are notified of the following upcoming sessions held at the City Council Chamber:
- Rules and Legislation Committee: Scheduled for Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 10:30 AM to set future agendas and review legislative proposals.
- Special Public Safety Committee: Recent deliberations included the Community Policing Advisory Board Annual Report and proposed amendments to the municipal code regarding public offenses.
