Broadway Fire Recovery: Local Assistance Center Operations

Following the major three-alarm structure fire that occurred on January 19 at the 1700 block of Broadway, the City of Oakland continues to prioritize recovery resources for those impacted. A Local Assistance Center (LAC) remains active at 150 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza to coordinate essential support services for displaced residents and affected businesses, including the Dope Era clothing store. The center serves as a one-stop resource for housing coordination, financial assistance, and the replacement of vital documents lost in the blaze.

The Oakland Fire Department confirms that investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing. Residents needing to retrieve essential belongings from the affected building are advised to contact their property managers to coordinate safe entry escorted by city officials.

New Automated Speed Safety Cameras Active

As part of the city’s commitment to the Vision Zero initiative, the automated speed safety camera program is now officially live in high-injury corridors across Oakland. As of today, Monday, January 26, the program is in the midst of a 60-day public awareness period. During this introductory phase, motorists captured exceeding the speed limit by 11 MPH or more will receive written warnings in the mail rather than financial citations. This period is designed to educate the public and encourage safer driving habits before the transition to full enforcement later this spring.

Public Health Advisories: Seasonal Influenza and Environmental Risks

The Alameda County Public Health Department has issued several critical health updates for the winter season. Health officials report a significant surge in seasonal influenza cases, primarily driven by the H3N2 strain. Residents are strongly encouraged to utilize local community clinics for updated vaccinations to mitigate the spread.

In addition to respiratory health, the following advisories are currently in effect:

  • Kratom and 7-OH Warning: State health providers caution against the use of kratom products containing 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), which have been linked to serious adverse effects and fatal overdoses.
  • Leptospirosis Alert: Following identified infections in neighboring Berkeley near Codornices Creek, residents are advised to avoid contact with potentially contaminated water or mud, particularly in areas with known rodent activity.

Ongoing Infrastructure and Construction Projects

Oakland Department of Transportation (OakDOT) crews continue work on several major safety and connectivity projects this week. Residents should expect minor traffic delays and temporary lane closures in the following areas:

  • 14th Street Safety Project: Continued installation of pedestrian and bicycle safety enhancements in the downtown corridor.
  • 7th Street Connection: Ongoing roadway improvements aimed at reconnecting West Oakland with the downtown district.
  • Grand Avenue Complete Streets: Paving and safety modifications are active near the Lake Merritt area.

Cultural Affairs Leadership Announcement

The City is pleased to announce the appointment of Lyz Luke as the new Cultural Affairs Manager. Following the successful grand reopening of the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts on January 24, Luke is scheduled to officially begin her tenure on March 2, 2026, leading the city's efforts in arts and community engagement.
