New Community Protection Measures on Telegraph Avenue and Broadway

Starting Friday evening, March 6, 2026, the City of Oakland is implementing new community protection measures to enhance safety within the Arts and Entertainment District. These measures are specifically targeted for Friday and Saturday nights along the Telegraph Avenue and Broadway corridors. Residents and visitors should be aware that stricter parking enforcement will begin tonight. Parking is strictly prohibited between 15th Street and Grand Avenue on Broadway, as well as along Telegraph Avenue, from 4:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

In addition to parking restrictions, the city will deploy road barriers to minimize illegal vehicular activity and ensure smoother pedestrian flow. There will also be a noticeable increase in police presence in these areas after dark. These enhancements aim to support local small businesses and ensure the community can safely enjoy the neighborhood's nightlife. The city plans to take an iterative approach, refining these restrictions based on real-time observations throughout the summer months.

Public Safety Advisories

  • International Boulevard Enforcement: The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is continuing its active enforcement operations along the International Boulevard corridor. These ongoing efforts are focused on addressing human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. Residents may notice a heightened law enforcement presence as part of this sustained commitment to public safety.
  • East Oakland Prowling Investigation: OPD has issued a public safety advisory regarding a series of prowling incidents in East Oakland. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, secure their properties, and report any suspicious activity to the department immediately.

Parking and Infrastructure Updates

The City of Oakland has officially extended the grace period for Sunday parking meter enforcement. While originally slated for earlier implementation, the first day of enforcement for Sunday meters will now be April 12, 2026. Drivers are reminded that while the Sunday grace period remains in effect, all other standard parking regulations and time limits continue to apply throughout the week.

Construction is also scheduled to begin this month on the Adeline Street Bridge Seismic Retrofit Project. This vital infrastructure work will improve the bridge’s structural resilience and seismic safety. The project ensures the continued operability of this critical corridor linking the Port of Oakland to Interstate 880. Commuters should prepare for potential traffic shifts in the West Oakland area as work commences.

Upcoming Public Meetings

While no formal City Council sessions are scheduled for Friday, March 6, several key committee meetings are set for next week. On Tuesday, March 10, the Finance and Management Committee will review informational reports on Measure Q and OPD overtime. Simultaneously, the Life Enrichment Committee will discuss the 2026 Homelessness Strategic Action Plan. Residents are invited to participate in these meetings in person at City Hall or virtually via the city's official streaming channels.
