Incident reported around 4 a.m. Sunday in Uptown

Oakland police said a shooting suspect was arrested early Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026, after an officer was assaulted during an attempted escape from the scene of gunfire in the Uptown neighborhood.

Officers were in the area at about 4 a.m. when they heard gunshots and responded to the 500 block of 17th Street near Telegraph Avenue. A victim was found on the ground and transported by paramedics to a local hospital. Police said the victim was listed in critical but stable condition.

What police say happened before and after the shots

Investigators determined the victim had been involved in a physical fight with another person shortly before the shooting. Police said the shooter fired during or immediately after the altercation and then fled on foot.

During the ensuing response, an officer was assaulted by a person fleeing the scene, police said. The suspect was arrested and booked in connection with the shooting. Police did not release the suspect’s identity, specify the suspected role of any additional individuals, or describe the nature of the officer’s injuries.

What remains unknown

As of Sunday, police had not released details on:

  • a possible motive or whether the people involved knew each other;
  • the type of firearm used or whether a weapon was recovered;
  • the precise sequence of events leading from the fight to the shooting;
  • any expected charges or whether a court date had been set.

The victim’s condition and any updated medical information were not released beyond the initial description provided by police.

How the case is being investigated

The investigation is being handled as a felony assault case, with police seeking information from the public. Investigators requested tips as well as any videos or photographs that may show the shooting, the moments immediately before it, or the suspect’s movement in the area.

Police asked anyone with information to contact the felony assault unit at 510-238-3426. Videos or photos can be sent to [email protected].

Police characterized the case as ongoing, signaling that additional investigative steps—such as reviewing potential surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and confirming the circumstances of the reported fight—may affect how the incident is ultimately charged and described in court records.
