Oakland Planning Commission and Police Reform Task Force Convene Today

City Government Meetings for Wednesday, February 18, 2026
Oakland’s political landscape remains active today, Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as several key city bodies convene to address urban development and law enforcement oversight. While some committee sessions have been removed from the schedule, the Planning Commission and the Police Commission’s Discipline Matrix Ad Hoc Committee will move forward with their scheduled agendas.
Planning Commission Takes Up Public Hearings
The Oakland City Planning Commission is scheduled to meet this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at City Hall in Hearing Room 1. Led by Chair Jennifer Renk and Vice-Chair Natalie Sandoval, the commission will conduct regular business and hold public hearings on various development proposals. Under the current governance structure, the commission’s decisions are central to managing Oakland’s growth and land-use policies. Today's session is being held in person at 1 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, following the city's return to fully in-person deliberations.
Police Commission Focuses on Disciplinary Transparency
Later this evening, the Oakland Police Commission’s Discipline Matrix Ad Hoc Committee will meet virtually at 6:00 p.m. This committee is tasked with a critical component of the city’s police reform efforts: the review of the Oakland Police Department’s Discipline Matrix. The goal of the session is to ensure that the matrix aligns with fair and consistent disciplinary practices, reflecting modern industry standards for progressive discipline. These weekly meetings are a cornerstone of the city’s efforts to maintain compliance with the federal Negotiated Settlement Agreement (NSA), which outlines specific reform tasks for officer discipline and transparent reporting.
Cancellations and Recent Council Actions
While the Planning and Police commissions remain active today, other scheduled activities have seen changes. The Planning and Oversight Committee for the Oakland Fund for Children and Youth, originally set for this evening, has been canceled. Similarly, the Program Planning Committee meeting for the Alameda County-Oakland Community Action Partnership was also removed from the calendar.
Today’s meetings follow a major session of the Oakland City Council yesterday, where officials moved forward with an ordinance to implement a “Demand Reduction” model for sex trafficking. That legislation aims to align Oakland Municipal Code with state law by repealing loitering offenses for prostitution and instead focusing on fines for sex-purchasers and traffickers. The council also renewed its declaration of a local public health emergency regarding the HIV/AIDS epidemic and homelessness, signaling the administration’s continued focus on public health and safety under the leadership of Mayor Barbara Lee.
