Oakland man receives five-year federal prison term for assaulting and robbing a U.S. mail carrier

Five-year sentence follows 2023 robbery and assault during search for postal keys
An Oakland man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for robbing a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier, a case that prosecutors said involved stolen vehicles, an assault on the carrier, and the theft of hundreds of pieces of mail.
U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín imposed the sentence on Monday, Feb. 9, 2026. The defendant, 30-year-old Joseph Michael McBee, also received three years of supervised release following his prison term.
Court records describe a chain of events that began early on Oct. 10, 2023, when McBee stole a 2015 Kia Soul that was parked on a residential street in Oakland. Later that morning, he arrived in the stolen vehicle at a Toyota dealership in Daly City and helped two other people steal a 2023 Toyota Camry. Authorities said the trio then drove around San Francisco looking for a mail carrier to rob.
At about 10:25 a.m., they spotted a U.S. mail truck and a letter carrier. Prosecutors said McBee got out of the stolen Toyota and confronted the carrier, demanding postal keys. When the carrier refused, McBee pushed him to the ground and stole his wallet. The carrier sustained bruising to both arms. During the incident, mail trays containing more than 500 pieces of mail were taken, authorities said.
Prosecutors said the group drove back to Oakland after the robbery, where the carrier’s credit card was used at a gas station store.

Two others connected to the incident also entered guilty pleas in separate cases: Ebony Reeves, charged with receipt of stolen mail, and Felix Wilson, charged with aiding and abetting mail robbery.

Authorities said McBee was not arrested until Oct. 31, 2023, after a vehicle chase and foot pursuit that law enforcement described as extensive and dangerous. When he was apprehended, investigators said he had a firearm and ammunition in his possession.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, reflecting ongoing federal enforcement efforts focused on protecting postal workers and securing mail routes, particularly when robberies target postal keys and mail trays that can be used to facilitate broader theft and fraud schemes.
