Oakland City Update: Holiday Service Impacts and Public Safety Notices

Holiday Observance: Presidents' Day Closures
In observance of the Presidents' Day holiday on Monday, February 16, 2026, most non-emergency City of Oakland administrative offices will be closed. Residents should be aware that while administrative services are paused, emergency services including police, fire, and 911 dispatch will remain fully operational. City-operated senior centers and certain recreation centers will also observe holiday closures. Regular business hours for all municipal departments are expected to resume on Tuesday, February 17.
Parking Enforcement and Street Sweeping
Oakland Public Works has announced that street sweeping will be suspended on Monday, February 16, in alignment with the federal holiday. Residents are not required to move their vehicles for street sweeping on this day, and no citations will be issued for this specific violation. Additionally, the City of Oakland has officially extended the grace period for Sunday parking meter enforcement. The new enforcement schedule is now set to begin on April 12, 2026, providing residents and visitors continued flexibility for Sunday parking in commercial districts through the coming weeks.

Ongoing Public Works: 14th Street Safety Project
Construction continues on the 14th Street Safety Project, which aims to transform one of downtown’s most active corridors. Current work is focused on the south side of 14th Street between Broadway and Franklin Street. Pedestrians and cyclists should remain alert for temporary sidewalk diversions and narrowed traffic lanes. This multi-year project, designed to improve transit reliability for the 14 bus line and install protected bike lanes, remains on track for its projected completion in August 2026.
Public Service: Free Tax Assistance
The City continues to offer free tax preparation assistance for low-to-moderate-income households through the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program. Local residents are encouraged to visit designated community centers to ensure they are receiving all eligible credits before the upcoming filing deadlines.
