Oakland City Council Convenes Concurrent Session on Public Safety and Local Emergencies

Key Legislation and Social Reform

One of the most significant items on today’s agenda is a proposed ordinance to amend Oakland Municipal Code 9.08.260. This amendment seeks to transition the city toward a 'Demand Reduction' model for sex trafficking. If passed, the ordinance would repeal the existing offense of loitering for prostitution and instead establish the act of loitering for the purpose of purchasing commercial sex as a punishable offense. The Council will review a multi-year plan aimed at meeting voter-mandated staffing and service levels across various city departments. Additionally, an informational report on the 2024 City of Oakland Disparity Study will be presented, providing insights into equitable procurement and contracting practices within the city government.
