Man Walking in East Oakland Roadway Dies After Vehicle Strike; Police Seek Information in Ongoing Investigation

Fatal collision reported on Bancroft Avenue corridor
A man died late at night in East Oakland after being struck by a vehicle while he was in a travel lane, police said. Officers were dispatched shortly after 10 p.m. to Bancroft Avenue near 61st Avenue, where they found the victim lying in the westbound lane. Medics and an Oakland Fire Department crew responded, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation, with authorities working to determine how and why the pedestrian was in the roadway and whether driver impairment, speed, roadway lighting, or other factors played a role. Police have not released the victim’s name, describing him only as a man in his 60s.
Driver description and investigative focus
Investigators are treating the case as a hit-and-run. A silver or white pickup truck was reported heading westbound immediately after the collision, police said. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the impact, seen a pickup in the area around the time of the crash, or has relevant video to contact the Oakland Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit at (510) 777-8570.
No arrest has been announced. Authorities have not said whether alcohol or drugs were involved, and no additional details about the driver or license plate have been released.
Context: pedestrian deaths on city streets and freeways
The fatality is part of a pattern of serious pedestrian-involved crashes reported in Oakland in recent months, including incidents on downtown streets and on nearby freeways where people on foot were struck at night. In addition to street-level collisions, investigators in separate cases have reported pedestrians being hit on Interstate 580 and Interstate 880 in Oakland, underscoring the dangers when people enter high-speed roadways where drivers have limited time to react.
What authorities typically ask the public to share
In hit-and-run investigations, police commonly seek information that can help identify a vehicle and reconstruct events. Authorities encourage witnesses to provide:
- Dashcam, doorbell, or business surveillance footage from the area and time window
- Descriptions of vehicle damage, distinctive features, or partial license plates
- Statements from anyone who was driving through the corridor and saw a pedestrian in or near the lanes
- Any observations of a vehicle stopping briefly or leaving the area at speed
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department Traffic Investigation Unit at (510) 777-8570.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials have not released further details about the circumstances leading up to the collision.
