Major Delays Expected on I-880 and Webster Tube as Super Bowl LX Activities Ramp Up

Wednesday Morning Commute Update
Good morning, Oakland. Commuters should prepare for a high-volume day across the East Bay as several major factors converge this Wednesday, February 4. With Super Bowl LX festivities officially underway and critical infrastructure maintenance ongoing, we recommend allowing at least an extra 20 to 30 minutes for your morning and evening travel.
Overnight Tube Closures and Roadworks
The most significant local impact involves the Webster Tube. Caltrans has confirmed the final night of scheduled maintenance for the tunnel connecting Oakland to Alameda. If you are traveling late tonight, be aware that a full tube closure will be in effect from 11:00 PM tonight until 5:00 AM tomorrow morning. Single-lane closures will begin as early as 7:00 PM. Motorists are advised to use the Posey Tube or the Park Street Bridge as alternatives.
Additionally, regional roadwork continues to affect the northern and eastern corridors:
- I-80 Richmond: Expect overnight lane closures between McDonald Avenue and Richmond Parkway. These 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM closures are resulting in residual morning congestion for those heading south into Oakland.
- Carquinez Bridge: Daytime lane closures on the bridge are scheduled from 3:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This is part of a long-term maintenance project and is causing notable backups for morning commuters coming from Vallejo.
- I-880 and I-980: Early staging for the Oakland-Alameda Access Project is now visible. While no full daytime closures are active yet, increased presence of work crews near the Jackson Street and Broadway off-ramps is slowing traffic.
AC Transit and BART Service Alerts
Transit riders should be mindful of the major "Realign" service adjustments that went into effect on February 1. Several routes have been modified to improve reliability, but these changes may affect your timing:
- Line 800: The final eastbound trip from San Francisco now terminates in Downtown Oakland rather than continuing to Richmond.
- Transbay Line F: Five new weekday morning trips have been added starting at 40th Street and San Pablo Avenue to help with heavy overcrowding.
- Capitol Corridor: Be advised that several trains, including 520, 526, 531, and 534, have been canceled through March due to equipment shortages. Check the latest schedule before heading to the Jack London Square station.
Super Bowl LX Congestion
With the Super Bowl taking place in Santa Clara this Sunday, traffic across the entire Bay Area is significantly higher than seasonal norms. In San Francisco, major closures near the Moscone Center (Howard and Mission Streets) are pushing additional volume onto the Bay Bridge, which is trickling back into the MacArthur Maze. We strongly encourage using BART for transbay travel this week to avoid unpredictable bridge delays.
