Commute Overview for Monday, March 2, 2026

Good morning, Oakland commuters. As we begin the first work week of March, a significant long-term infrastructure project is kicking off today that will alter traffic patterns in Downtown Oakland and the Jack London District. While the morning rush is currently flowing at typical speeds, drivers and transit riders should prepare for new work zones and minor detours starting this morning.

Oakland Alameda Access Project (OAAP) Launch

Today marks the official start of the first phase of the Oakland Alameda Access Project. Caltrans and the Alameda County Transportation Commission are beginning staging and preparation work that will eventually reshape the connectivity between I-880, I-980, and the Posey/Webster Tubes. Here is what to expect today:

  • I-880 Northbound Oak Street Off-Ramp: Starting today, the right-turn lane on the NB I-880 Oak Street off-ramp is closed for widening work. The left-turn and middle lanes remain open, but motorists should expect bottlenecking as traffic merges.
  • Oak Street Staging: Crews are installing K-rail and construction signage along the east side of Oak Street. Parking restrictions are now in effect in this area.
  • Harrison and 5th Streets: Preparation work including utility locating and lane reductions is beginning on Harrison Street between 4th and 5th Streets, and on 5th Street between Alice and Harrison.

Highway and Tunnel Updates

Beyond the new construction in the downtown corridor, several other major arteries have active alerts:

  • Caldecott Tunnel (SR-24): Following overnight maintenance in Bores #1 and #3, all bores are currently open for the morning commute. However, be advised that these overnight closures are scheduled to continue throughout the week.
  • Posey Tube (SR-260): Routine maintenance is resulting in scheduled overnight closures. Ensure you complete your transbay travel before the late-evening windows to avoid detours to the Park Street or High Street bridges.
  • Bay Bridge: The Joint Rehabilitation Project continues. While ramps are open this morning, expect narrow lanes and ongoing work zones near the Yerba Buena Island transition.

Public Transit: AC Transit and BART

Transit riders should note several schedule and route changes that went into effect over the weekend:

  • AC Transit Line 65: A new detour begins today due to construction on Senior Avenue at Fairlawn Drive. This detour is expected to last through March 13.
  • Line 7: Effective yesterday, Line 7 to Emeryville Amtrak has discontinued service at the stop on The Alameda at Marin Avenue.
  • BART: Service is currently running on time following the resolution of last week’s network hardware issues. Note that train control modernization work continues to cause 30-minute delays after 9:00 p.m. on the Yellow Line between Millbrae and SFO.

Drivers are encouraged to use navigation apps to monitor real-time delays as the new OAAP work zones settle into the daily traffic flow.
