Lighter Road Traffic Expected for Presidents' Day; Transit Shifts to Weekend Schedules

Commuters in Oakland can expect a significantly different pace this Monday, February 16, 2026. In observation of the Presidents' Day federal holiday, traffic volumes on major arteries such as I-880, I-580, and Highway 24 are expected to be much lighter than a typical Monday morning rush. However, while the roads may be clearer, those relying on public transportation must account for substantial holiday service reductions across all major regional agencies.

BART and AC Transit Schedule Changes

Public transit users should prepare for altered frequencies and later start times today. Major updates include:

  • BART Service: The rail system is operating on a Saturday service schedule. Trains began running at 6:00 AM and will continue until midnight. A significant benefit for holiday travelers is that today is a parking holiday for BART; parking is free at all stations except for Milpitas and Berryessa/North San Jose, which are operated by the VTA.
  • AC Transit: All local and Transbay bus lines are operating on Sunday schedules today. This represents a major shift for regular weekday commuters, as many express lines may not be in service and headways will be longer throughout the day.
  • West Oakland Station Alert: Travelers using the West Oakland BART station should be aware that portions of the parking lot remain closed today as part of ongoing transit-oriented development construction. This closure is scheduled to continue through February 17.

Ferry and Regional Transit Updates

The San Francisco Bay Ferry is operating under a Weekend Service schedule for the holiday. Commuters should note that this means there is no service for the Alameda Seaplane, Harbor Bay, or South San Francisco routes today. Furthermore, the Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle is not in operation. Regular weekday service for all ferry routes will resume on Tuesday, February 17.

Roadwork and Highway Conditions

While Caltrans typically avoids major daytime lane closures on the state highway system during federal holidays to accommodate travelers, localized maintenance continues. Specifically, overnight maintenance closures have been scheduled for the Posey Tube (State Route 260) connecting Oakland and Alameda. Motorists should remain alert for early morning or late-night detours in this corridor.

Additionally, early construction staging for the Oakland Alameda Access Project is now visible. While the bulk of construction is not expected to ramp up until March, drivers may notice increased activity and equipment near the I-880 and I-980 interchanges. In downtown Oakland, motorists should also be mindful of ongoing streetscape improvements near the 19th Street BART station, which may cause minor sidewalk and curb-lane restrictions.

Commuter Advice

With the absence of school-related traffic and many office closures, local surface streets through the Grand Lake and Fruitvale districts should remain fluid. If you are planning a Transbay trip into San Francisco, remember that while Muni is running on a Sunday schedule, parking meters and safety violations are still strictly enforced citywide. Always check real-time transit apps before departing to confirm the location of the next arriving vehicle under the holiday timetable.
