I-880 Ramp Closures and Oakland Alameda Access Project Work Lead Saturday Delays

Oakland Alameda Access Project Enters First Major Phase
Commuters and residents in Downtown Oakland should prepare for shifting traffic patterns as the first phase of the Oakland Alameda Access Project (OAAP) continues this weekend. Following the official start of construction on March 2, crews are actively working on several key corridors to improve connectivity between I-880, I-980, and the Posey and Webster Tubes. While this is a long-term investment in safety and accessibility, immediate impacts are expected along the Oak Street and 6th Street corridors.
Major Arteries and Ramp Closures
The most significant impact for those entering Downtown Oakland from the South Bay is at the Northbound I-880 Oak Street off-ramp. The right-turn lane on this ramp has been closed for long-term construction as part of the ramp widening process. While the middle and left-turn lanes remain open, motorists should anticipate bottlenecking and significant delays during peak midday hours on Saturday. Additionally, the following local roadworks are in effect:
- 5th Street Corridor: Localized traffic control and lane reductions are in place between Alice Street and Harrison Street for utility preparation.
- Harrison Street: Expect temporary lane reductions on the east side of the street between 4th and 5th Streets.
- Oak Street: Construction signage and K-rail have been installed along the right side of the road, narrowing the available space for through-traffic.
Bay Bridge and Highway Conditions
Caltrans has issued a high wind advisory for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. As of this morning, travel is not recommended for campers, trailers, or permit loads due to gusty conditions across the span. On I-580 and I-880, while no major new weekend-only closures have been announced, standard maintenance remains a possibility. Drivers are encouraged to maintain awareness of workers in the active OAAP zones near the freeway interfaces.
Public Transit Updates
Public transit riders should be aware of ongoing maintenance and service adjustments affecting regional travel:
- BART: Several escalators remain out of service for major repairs in the downtown core. This includes the street-level escalator at 12th St. Oakland City Center (Ogawa Plaza) and the 19th St. Oakland station entrance at the Telegraph Avenue alley.
- AC Transit: Riders are reminded that the "Realign" service network changes, which went into effect in February, remain active. This includes significant schedule adjustments and route modifications designed to improve reliability across the East Bay.
Commuters are advised to allow an extra 15 to 20 minutes when traveling through the I-880/Oak Street area and to utilize transit apps for real-time bus and train arrivals.
