Morning Commute Overview

Commuters in Oakland and the greater East Bay should prepare for a challenging morning on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. A combination of inclement weather and official transit advisories suggests significant delays on major arteries and bridges. Heavy rainfall is expected throughout the day, with lower elevations seeing between 1 to 2 inches, which significantly increases the risk of flash flooding and hydroplaning on local freeways.

Major Bridge and Highway Alerts

The primary concern for transbay commuters is a high wind advisory currently in effect for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Caltrans has issued a formal recommendation that travel is not advised for campers, trailers, or permit loads due to the intensity of crosswinds. All motorists are urged to maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel and reduce speeds while crossing.

  • I-80 Corridor: In addition to the wind, dense fog is impacting visibility along the corridor, particularly for those traveling from the north through Vacaville. Further east, I-80 remains closed from Colfax to the Nevada State Line due to heavy snow, which may affect regional logistics and long-distance travel into Oakland.
  • I-880 and Webster Tube: Early construction staging for the Oakland Alameda Access Project is now visible. While major closures are not yet in effect, staging activities near the I-880/I-980 junction may cause minor rubbernecking delays.

AC Transit Service Adjustments

Effective today, Wednesday, February 18, riders on Lines 12 and 27 should note a specific stop closure due to construction. The stop at The Alameda and Hopkins Street (Stop ID 53167) will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily through February 25. Riders are encouraged to use the nearest alternative stops for service toward Jack London Square.

Commuters are also reminded of the broader "Realign" service changes that went into effect earlier this month. Key shifts include:

  • Line 800: The final eastbound trip from San Francisco now terminates in Downtown Oakland rather than continuing to Richmond.
  • Line F: Five new weekday morning trips have been added starting from 40th Street and San Pablo Avenue to help alleviate overcrowding for UC Berkeley-bound riders.
  • Line 7: Start times have been adjusted to 6:16 a.m. for buses heading to El Cerrito del Norte BART.

BART and Transit Fare Tips

BART remains on a standard weekday schedule, but riders using station vending machines should be aware of a technical requirement following recent Clipper upgrades. When adding funds, you must hold your Clipper card steady at the reader rather than tapping it, then swipe your payment card as prompted. Additionally, while the temporary parking lot closures at West Oakland Station were scheduled to conclude yesterday, residual staging for transit-oriented development (TOD) may still limit some spaces today.
