City Notice Roundup: Downtown Recovery, Traffic Safety, and Public Health Alerts

Recovery Resources: Broadway Fire Local Assistance Center
The City of Oakland continues to provide support for residents and business owners impacted by the three-alarm structure fire that occurred on January 19, 2026, in the 1700 block of Broadway. Mayor Barbara Lee has emphasized the city's commitment to ensuring no resident is left behind during the recovery process. A Local Assistance Center is active at 150 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza to connect displaced individuals with housing resources, social services, and financial support. Displaced tenants who need to coordinate access to their units for the retrieval of essential belongings are advised to contact their property managers or the Oakland Fire Department’s liaison. Additionally, the Human Services Department’s Oakland Paratransit for the Elderly and Disabled (OPED) program remains available to provide transportation support for those impacted by the incident.
Traffic Safety: Speed Camera Program and 14th Street Construction
The City’s new automated speed safety camera program is officially live as of mid-January. For the current 60-day introductory period, the system is issuing warnings rather than citations to allow drivers to adjust to the new safety measures. This initiative aims to reduce traffic fatalities and promote calmer streets across high-injury corridors. Concurrent with this program, the 14th Street Safety Project is entering a significant phase of construction. Through February 14, 2026, work will be concentrated on the south side of 14th Street between Broadway and Franklin Street. Residents should expect lane closures and sidewalk detours in the area as crews install new safety infrastructure, including protected bike lanes and improved pedestrian crossings. The full project is slated for completion in August 2026.
Public Health: Respiratory Virus Season and Regional Advisories
The Alameda County Public Health Department reminds residents that winter respiratory virus season is in effect through March 31, 2026. Masking is strongly recommended for all staff and visitors in patient care areas of hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and dialysis centers. This guidance follows a January 5 health advisory regarding an increase in Influenza A (H3N2) cases across the region. Furthermore, an active regional health advisory was issued on January 14 concerning a cluster of leptospirosis infections identified near the Oakland-Berkeley border at 8th and Harrison Streets. While no human cases have been confirmed, the infection has been detected in local animal populations. Officials advise residents to avoid contact with standing water or mud that may be contaminated by animal urine and to ensure pets are kept away from wildlife-heavy areas.
Upcoming Legislative Meetings
The Oakland City Council has several committee meetings scheduled for the coming week. On Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the Finance and Management Committee will convene at 9:30 A.M. in the City Council Chamber, followed by the Community and Economic Development Committee at 1:30 P.M.
