Sunday Commute Overview

Oakland residents should prepare for a mix of transit delays and late-night roadwork this Sunday, January 25, 2026. While the morning started with the successful reopening of the Posey Tube following overnight maintenance, those relying on regional rail and the Bay Bridge later today will need to plan for extra travel time. The most significant impacts involve scheduled single-tracking on the BART Yellow Line and overnight bridge joint rehabilitation on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

BART Yellow Line Service Reduction

Commuters traveling between Oakland and Contra Costa County will face service reductions on the Yellow Line today. BART has announced that crews are performing essential vegetation management near the Berkeley Hills Tunnel to ensure long-term safety and reliability. The following impacts are expected:

  • Location: Single-tracking will occur between the Rockridge and Orinda stations.
  • Timing: Work is scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Delays: Riders should expect additional travel times of 10 to 15 minutes.

BART officials recommend checking real-time departures before heading to the station, especially for those connecting to or from the 12th St. Oakland City Center or MacArthur stations.

Bay Bridge and Highway Maintenance

Caltrans is continuing its multi-year Joint Rehabilitation Project on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. While the westbound off-ramp to 5th and Harrison in San Francisco reopened early this morning at 6:00 a.m., eastbound travelers will face lane closures tonight heading back into Oakland.

  • Eastbound I-80 (West Span): Lanes 1 and 2 will close starting at 11:00 p.m. tonight, with Lane 3 closing at 11:59 p.m. These closures will remain in effect until 7:00 a.m. Monday morning.
  • Richmond-San Rafael Bridge (I-580): Maintenance continues throughout January. Westbound lane and bike path closures are scheduled nightly from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
  • Regional Bridges: Ongoing work on the Carquinez and Benicia bridges may cause minor shifts in traffic flow, though most impacts are concentrated during weekday and Saturday hours.

AC Transit and Local Roads

AC Transit lines 30, 51A, 851, and O have returned to their standard Sunday routes following the early morning reopening of the Posey Tube at 4:30 a.m. Within downtown Oakland, motorists are advised to remain cautious near the 1700 block of Broadway. While major thoroughfares remain open, localized sidewalk closures and emergency vehicle staging may still be present due to the after-effects of a recent three-alarm fire in the area. No other major accidents or emergency closures have been reported on Oakland’s arterial streets this morning.
